Mother Earth has been infected with Coronavirus (Covid-19). While all its 7-billion inhabitants are gasping for breath, including myself, we lucky British people under our ‘Union Jack’ flag, are being treated to 80% pay-days by the pleasure of Her Majesty’s Government. So, why does this make headline news?
It grabs the attention of all thinking human beings because, whether we work or not, our wages here in Britain are relatively secure… that’s what we are looking for, from one day to the next. Apart from grasping survival, we are also desperate for security, including that of income, food and shelter.
On the streets of our cities (but many of us live in the sticks), people are demanding attention from their respective governments to answer the questions about freedom and fresh air, food and fairness, fuel for their cars and fodder for their horses! However, no fancy alliteration can bring about solutions to everyday human disruption without dealing with the questions about cash in the hand, or rather, a LACK of it.
Even if we can’t ensure our elderly relatives will survive, we need to look after our children and ourselves in a way that resembles civilisation and a future worth living. Without money or total support and, dare I say some level of guidance or ‘control’ by the state, we are heading up against a mountain range without a mountain pass to travel through.
British tradition is recognised for its freedom of citizens, eccentricity and humour of course. Today it is keeping to form by paying the wages of every working person so that, individually, we don’t suffer the ultimate embarrassment of having to rely on a free ’round’ in the pub. If it’s my round, I will honour my duty to pay. If it’s the Government’s round, I will expect them to pay too. If it soon becomes my turn to pay again, I must find a way of going home early!! Maybe I should provide that SOCIAL DISTANCING (space between individual citizens) during this dangerous Covid-19 period! Now, could this be my way of paying back the British Government for it’s generosity in our year of great need (2020). I think it’s desirable, don’t you ? And what about any lessons learned by working from home… shall we try earning our keep from home instead of going back to that old place we used to call “work”? This could be ‘Pay-Back’ time in more ways than one!
After COVID – 19 has run its course, we will have to pick ourselves off the floor and start working hard to make a living. We will have to catch up for all the losses incurred during the shutdown and stop looking over our shoulders for a nasty virus every minute of the day.
